Eco shampoos use gentler, plant-based cleansers rather than sulphates, which means they clean without stripping the scalp's natural oils. For a lot of people, that means less dryness, less irritation, and hair that stays cleaner for longer between washes. There can be a short adjustment period of a few washes while your scalp adapts, particularly if you've been using conventional products for a long time, but most people find their hair settles into a healthier pattern once it does.

Organic shampoo is not a known cause of hair loss. Avoid synthetic fragrances and alcohol in your formula, as both can aggravate an already reactive scalp.

Check the ingredient list is free of petrochemicals and synthetic additives, packaging that is plastic-free, recycled, or refillable, and credible certifications like organic, vegan, or cruelty-free marks from recognised bodies.

The main differences are in the ingredients and the packaging. Conventional shampoos rely on sulphates for lather, silicones for slip, and synthetic preservatives to extend shelf life, all packaged in single-use plastic. 

Eco shampoos use plant-derived cleansers, natural conditioning agents, and biodegradable formulas, and its packaging is designed to produce far less waste. The cleanse is just as effective but the impact on your hair and scalp, and the planet, is meaningfully different.

The most common formats are solid bars with minimal or compostable wrapping, bottled shampoos in recycled or recyclable plastic, aluminium bottles, or glass, and concentrated refill pouches that top up a reusable bottle.

Bars have the smallest footprint overall and travel well. Refills are a good option if you prefer a liquid formula. Bottled options in recycled packaging are the most straightforward swap from what most people are already used to.

Bathroom plastics are among the hardest to recycle. Small bottles, pumps, and caps can't always be recycled, and even when they reach the right bin, processing rates are low.

Switching to a plastic-free shampoo format removes that waste entirely. A solid bar produces no plastic at any point in its life, and once you find one that suits your hair, it tends to be a straightforward, permanent swap.
