A Beginner’s Guide to Menstrual Cups

With a myriad of menstrual products on the market, what makes menstrual cups stand out?

For many users, menstrual cups offer a hygienic, efficient, and reliable method to handling their monthly cycle.

However, menstrual cups are also a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional period products. Stick with us as we dive into everything you need to know about choosing, using, and loving your menstrual cup.

What is a Menstrual Cup?

Menstrual cups are innovative period hygiene products that are designed to be inserted into the vagina to catch and collect menstrual fluid.

Shaped like a small, flexible bell, these are easy to insert and comfortable to wear. Once inserted, it forms a seal against the vaginal walls, ensuring a leak-free period experience for up to 12 hours, depending on your flow.

These are typically designed with medical-grade silicone, rubber, or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), all of which are safe for body contact.

The Benefits of Using Menstrual Cups

There are a variety of health, financial, and environmental advantages to switching to menstrual cups, which make them a popular choice for customers. These include:

  • Cost savings: Menstrual cups can be reused, reducing the need to stock up on period pads each month or frequently replace the cup.
  • Reduces waste: A single menstrual cup can last for up to 10 years, decreasing the amount of menstrual product waste that ends up in landfills.
  • Chemical-free: Menstrual cups are free from harmful chemicals, making them a healthier and safer alternative.
  • Low risk of TSS: Menstrual cups are associated with a lower risk of toxic shock syndrome compared to tampons.
  • Less frequent changes: As menstrual cups can hold a larger amount of fluid, they don’t need to be changed as frequently as pads or tampons.
  • Versatile options: Menstrual cups are available in a range of sizes to accommodate different body types, cervix heights, flows, and lifestyle needs.
  • Sustainable materials: Menstrual cups use sustainable materials compared to the bleached cotton and plastic in disposables.

How to Use a Menstrual Cup

Menstrual cups are simple and effective to use once you get the hang of them. But don’t worry, Re:gn is here to walk you through each step:

  1. Choose the right size: Menstrual cups usually come in at least two sizes. Smaller sizes are more beneficial for women aged 30 and under who have not given birth vaginally, and larger sizes are for women who have given birth or have a heavier flow.
  2. Sterilise before use: Sterilise your menstrual cup in a bowl of boiling water for 10-15 minutes before use. If it sinks to the bottom, take it out to avoid melting.
  3. Fold and insert: There are several folding methods, such as the C-fold or the punch-down fold. Experiment to find which option works best for you. When inserting, relax your muscles and insert the folded cup into your vagina, tilting it back to the base of your spine. It should sit a few inches below your cervix.
  4. Ensure a proper seal: Once the cup is in place, rotate it slightly to open it fully, creating a seal to prevent leaks. If it still feels dented, gently grip the base of the cup (not the stem) and rotate it to encourage it to open.
  5. Remove the cup: When removing the cup, pinch the base of it to break the seal and pull down gently to remove it. Empty the contents into the toilet.

How to Clean and Maintain a Menstrual cup

Rinse your menstrual cup after each use to prevent staining before inserting it back in.

To thoroughly clean your menstrual cup, use warm water and mild soap. Gently scrub at the cup to remove any tough stains.

Once your monthly cycle is over, sterilise your cup in boiling water for 5-10 minutes to ensure it's free of bacteria.

Store your menstrual cup in a clean, dry place, and keep it in a breathable fabric pouch to prevent bacterial growth.

If you notice sticky or powdery film, severe discolouration, or persistent odour, these are signs that your cup needs replacing.
